A goal is what is desired to happen, or the end results that a person or an organization hopes to achieve at the end of a set period. For example, the goal of my career choice as a HIPAA privacy officer is to be a full-fledged privacy officer who can handle all the functions related to the job. Objectives are things that an individual or an organization aims to achieve. An example of an objective is my objective to finish the Health Information Management course and graduate in 2015. Even though the course may be challenging at times, my motivation is what drives me. After the graduation, the next objective is to get RHIA and RHIT certificates. Once I am certified, looking for an entry-level job position in a health facility will be the next step. The experience gained after the achievement of this objective will immensely increase my experience. When my objectives are achieved, my goal of becoming an experienced and certified HIPAA privacy officer will be achieved.
Goals and objectives go hand in hand with any career development plans. The objectives are meant to guide an individual towards his/her goals. A personal career goal is the ultimate achievement that an individual can or would like to achieve within a specific time. It is, therefore, important to align your goals and achievements with this timeline. Personal satisfaction is always attained once all the goals and objectives are achieved at the set time.
My Short Term Goals and Objectives
Five-Year Goals and Objectives
In five years, my goal will be to be a certified HIPAA privacy officer. After three years, I would have attained the experience necessary to be hired for this job at a prestigious health facility. My degree will provide me with the necessary experience needed for this job. My skills related to the profession will increase, and I may be able to train other aspiring privacy officers. Within five years, I will be working directly with patients to ensure they have the necessary security that they require.
Ten-Year Goals and Objectives
In ten years, I will be an experienced privacy officer. My goal is to be promoted to a higher rank than a privacy officer. I will endeavor to achieve my Masters in Health Information Management, so as to attain all the required knowledge and skills. I will be promoted since I will have ten years of experience.
Fifteen-Year Goals and Objectives
In fifteen years, I will be a high ranking HIPAA official like a director. My experience will enable me to manage other privacy officers and at the same time attain the goals and objectives of the health facility. I will also aim at achieving my Ph.D. in Health Information Management.

I will be the highest ranking privacy officer and the head of the patient privacy department. I will be in charge of all the personnel in the department and will be making necessary decisions in the health facility. My goal of holding the highest ranking position in the department will be achieved, and all my objectives will be attained. I will open my own consultancy firm and provide recommendations and consulting services to other health facilities. Using my wealth of experience, I will help other health organizations improve their services.
The best outcome that can happen is that all my personal goals and objectives will be achieved. I will attain the necessary experience that is required for the job position and in five years I will be a HIPAA privacy officer. In ten years, I will be an experienced HIPAA privacy officer. I will be promoted and at the same time I will achieved my Masters in Health Information Management. My knowledge and skills will improve in ten years. In fifteen years, I will achieve my goal of being a high ranking HIPAA official like a director. My experience will enable me to manage other privacy officers, at the same time attaining the goals and objectives of the health facility. Moreover, I will get not only my Master degree but also my Ph.D. in Health Information Management.
On the other hand, the worst outcome in regard to my objectives and my goals is that I will not attain any of them. I may not get my degree and, therefore, I will not be employed by any health facility. My long term and short goals and objectives will be thwarted by the failure to attain the first objectives. In the long run, I may end up doing something different from what I`d like to do.
I would like to get some working experience from the Ministry Health Care in Wisconsin. The reason is because according to the privacy officers who work there, their days are never the same. The environment is challenging, and the responsibilities change on a daily basis. Every employee is respected, and each employee is assigned different duties. According to one of the employees at the Ministry Health Care, Wisconsin, "I've been doing this job for 10 years, and I really don't feel as if I'm doing 'maintenance' work yet. There always seems to be something happening." The company will provide a good environment that will encourage me to work harder to achieve all my goals and objectives. The health facility caters to a lot of patients and I will be able to work with different people from different backgrounds. However, if I decide to open my own company, it will be called Health Insurance Portability and Accountability consultancy firm. The company will provide all the services that any health facility may require with regard to patient privacy. The consultancy firm will provide consulting services to other health facilities in regard to how to improve their services.
In case the company I will work for or my own company runs out of business before my five-year goals and objectives are achieved, I will have to change my goals and objectives. Since I will already have had my degree, the necessary education will help get a job in another health institution. The experience acquired while working as an entry-level privacy officer for three years will provide me with an advantage over other applicants in regard to job search. Even though I won`t get a chance to train other junior privacy officers, I will have the necessary experience that will enable me to work for another health organization. It will not be difficult to find a job because I will have good recommendations from my previous employer. In case the health organization that I will be working for will close before my ten-year goals are achieved I will still be able regroup.
My ten year goals are to be promoted and to acquire my Masters in Health Information Management. The latter will still be attained because I will be able to fund my studies with my savings. In case I don`t make my promotion, I may be able to get that job position because of my professional development. My Master’s degree will enable me to get a job at any institution that is dealing with patient privacy. My knowledge and skills will be tremendously emphasized because of the experience gained while working at the former organization.
HIPAA privacy officer is a position that has been recently introduced. The primary role of a privacy officer is to ensure that a patient’s information is protected. The privacy officer is meant to develop and process policies that will meet the overall goals of the position. The duties of a privacy officer are to ensure that every organization can comply with the laws of the state, federal state and any available professional codes. Secondly, the officer has always to be aware of any amendments made to the existing laws and inform the organization about it. Knowing what happens in regard to the fundamental laws will ensure that the officer always complies with the privacy policies. The privacy officer acts as a bridge between the legal factors, the IT department and the research department.
In case this job is considered redundant in the future, one of the best things to do will be to invest in a related course. I would get a degree in law in order to perform almost similar functions. Moreover, I may attend a short IT course in order to continue with my profession. The IT diploma will supplement my degree in Health Information Management. I will still operate in the health sector, but I will be working in the information technology department. My dream profession may be redundant, but I will still be able to use my degree. I chose this course because of the reasons mentioned above.
When trying to achieve your personal goals and objectives, you may face some common barriers. The first one is lack of direction. If I am not able to find ways to achieve my objectives, I will not attain any of my long term and short term goals. Some of the negative comments that we may hear from our peers are very discouraging. The more attention I pay to everything that everyone around me is saying, the more confused I will be. These negative comments may reduce my morale and discourage me from achieving my objectives. It is very important for me to keep these kinds of people at distance in order to fully focus on my goals and objectives. Fear of failure is a barrier that many people have to overcome. Not knowing what is going to happen in the future is sometimes fearful.

Having different career plans is quite challenging. Different professions require different professional studies. Having different career plans is time-consuming, and no one is able to concentrate on what they really love. It is not possible to engage in different careers because you can only have one at a time. Concentrating on one career path requires an individual to be patient and perseverant.
