Brooklyn

New York is one of the most beautiful and popular city in the United States of America.  It t is divided into five very different sections. The biggest one is Brooklyn. Its population is above 2.5 million people.  This part is located in the west of Long Island with an area of 82 square miles (212 square kilometers). The name Brooklyn was in honor of the Dutch town of Breukelen.  It was situated on the shore of the East River of the Long Island.  Its west coast was inhabited by American Indians Canarsee.

When Brooklyn was an independent city, its center was in the north-western part of the area.  In 1898 it joined New York, and after this Brooklyn became the center of redevelopment and business of the city.  This part of The Big Apple resembles an anthill. Every day hundreds of people are moving from their homes to work, schools, colleges, universities by cars, subway, taxis, and buses.  Looking more attentively, one can get very much attracted with its beauty.

According to a very convenient ferry service to Manhattan, the center of Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights had been densely populated until 1814.  This made Brooklyn Heights the first satellite of Manhattan, and the center of Brooklyn became the business center. Brooklyn joined the City of New York in 1935.  There were a lot of houses and elevated railways dismantled during the Great Depression. Instead, the railways builders were supposed to lay on the roads to the Brooklyn Bridge.  Nowadays, the center of Brooklyn is full of modern business centers and commercial companies. In spite of this, it doesn’t lose its historical meaning and image.

Brooklyn is an array, where block after block the stone buildings of the Victorian age and several former estates are located.  There are different styles of architecture concentrated in this place. The federal type of architecture in the north in the early XIX century was pseudo-Greek and pseudo-Gothic styles, and also the Italian type of brown stone.  Brooklyn Heights was the first district of Brooklyn, where in 1965 the architectural monuments were under the protection of the conservation’s law of the New York City.

Unfortunately, there are just 0.5% of Native Americans living in the territory of Brooklyn nowadays.  About 52% of the population is white and 24.4% is African American. The amount of Asians in this part of New York is growing steadily with every year.  Such ethnic groups as American Indians and Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, people of Hispanic or Latino origin are less than 10% each of the whole population.

Due to the variety of Brooklyn’s ethnic population, there is a great number of sightseeing places, cafes, pubs, and promenades.  Of course, the area of Brooklyn has changed in the past 50 years by building skyscrapers, renewing monuments, parks, and streets.  Nevertheless, all builders and architects have done their best trying to save the spirit and beauty of old Brooklyn. The most beautiful and spectacular building is the Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883.  It had been the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903, and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Brooklyn Museum are the places, where native American and tourists can get to know about history, music, arts of Americans and the whole world.  The Brooklyn Museum was opened in 1897. It is the nation’s second largest public art museum. It has in its permanent collection more than 1.5 million objects, from ancient Egyptian masterpieces to contemporary arts.

There are some awesome places to see and visit for children, love couples, and elderly

Brooklyn Botanic Garden is probably the most popular..  It attracts all visitors by its incredible blooming cherry trees, and great pond garden. This park has a beautiful flora garden and an unbelievable bonsai tree collection.  The exhibitions are very popular both among children and grown-ups.

Another place which has preserved the history of Brooklyn is the Coney Island.  In the early 1900s only rich habitants of New York could afford to live here. However, times have changed and everyone can come with friends or family to this place nowadays. Now it is a great Astroland. The main amusement is the Cyclone Rollercoaster, built in 1927.  It is on the National Register of Historic Places. One more historical place is major fast food Coney Island Nathan’s. It was the first in America to introduce a culinary masterpiece called hot dog to the world. Every year on July 4 Americans gather together and choose the fastest hot dog eater.

Prospect Park is one of the most popular places to walk on a sunny day

It is a public park located in central Brooklyn. There places for picnics, boating, Park Zoo to visit, birds sailing in Brooklyn’s only lake to observe and feed.

With the development of science, Brooklyn has grown into a high quality educational establishment with its colleges, universities, and libraries.  The Brooklyn Public Library is one of the biggest in New York. It offers millions of books and periodicals in all the major languages spoken in Brooklyn to all visitors.

For those people who really want to get to know the history, origin, and ancestors, this part of the greatest city in the world is opened like a book.  In spite of modern buildings, skyscrapers, the contemporary municipal transport in Brooklyn still has the spirit of ancient times. The air is still impregnated with smell of first discovers, first bans, crises and revival of economy.  People, who survived the times of ups and downs, wish nowadays the better future for the next generation. It is very important to remember and value our history. Learning from our past will avoid serious mistakes in the future.
